Bug Description

I use Inkscape to create vectors for laser cutting. I had been importing .svg files to EngraveLab without problem but a new control card required me to switch to RDWorksV8 (from Boss Laser) and the application only accepts .dxf files. When I save my Inkscape drawings as .dxf and then import there are many errors throughout the drawing:

--Objects are broken apart at vertices
--Additional lines added between arbitrary vertices of the broken objects
--Sometimes separate objects are connected

Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040
Windows 7 Home Edition

Please advise as to whether there is a reliable third party converter! Thanks!!

Please attach a test case (Inkscape SVG file, exported DXF file) to the bug report to allow further investigation, and provide details about the used DXF export settings.

Does the current stable release Inkscape 0.91 expose the same issues for you?

Hi ~suv,
I hadn't looked closely at the .dxf export settings and had been exporting with the "use LWPOLYLINE type of line output" box checked when getting the poor results... when I changed to "use ROBO-Master type of spline ouitput" I get much better results. Although it seems that the scale doesn't remain intact when reopening in Inkscape - that doesn't bother me too much because the RDWorksV8 laser cutting software does retain the scale... whew!

Please see the attached files for your reference:
Testered.svg (an original test file drawn in Inkscape)
testered_LWPOLYLINE.dxf (the bad dxf)
testered_ROBO-Master.dxf (the good dxf)

Have there been critical fixes to .dxf exporting since Inkscape version .48?
Or other good reasons to update?

I've been extremely happy with this version since downloading it... although, there are a couple things I'd do differently: For instance, Boolean operations always account for which object was created first (this took me a while to figure out) and so sometimes I will have to copy the first created object again and do a Boolean with it because it is now the last created object... this would work much better if based on the selection order - in other words, select object A and then object B and a subtraction will always be B from A because of the order selected.

Thanks again,
Brett

Attached is the dxf result I get using recent trunk and the option LWPOLYLINE output.

You can update to the latest dxf output by downloading the code from the website:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/trunk/files/head:/share/extensions/

You will need to download the three files: dxf_outlines.inx, dxf_outlines.py, and inkex.py, and put them in the folder Inkscape\share extensions. Make a backup of the original three files just in case.

just a word of warning, though, the new version uses a standard Inkscape resolution of 96dpi, not 90dpi, so you may see a slight scale change
