The attached file fails to open on Crunchbang Waldorf with Inkscape 0.48.3.1 and trunk revision 13564.
It contains an invalid value line 1562 (x="nan") for the image4381 object (imported PNG file with 3 pens). Replacing "nan" with "0" fixes the file opening issue and the file can used as expected.

Note that the invalid value is probably the cause of the crash, but so far I didn't manage to reproduce it with your -fixed- file (image exported, opened in Gimp, and then copy-pasted to Inkscape, resized and rotated as explained in your steps) or with a blank new document.

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → High

@MOW - Could you please give more details on your steps: where exactly in your file did your try to insert your image? Could you please attach your preferences.xml file in case there's something special in your Inkscape preferences that triggers the crash?
Thanks!

@jazzynico: Is there any control about where a pasted image ends up?
Please note the crash only happened with the 'rotate 90°" buttons/menu entry, not with turning and twisting stuff with the mouse.

(That aside, I'd really like a function to remove all transformations from an object, restoring the original tilt and aspect ratio)

I've confirmed that this bug is also triggered by using the Rotate function in the Transform dialog.

(Not coincidentally: I use the Transform dialog so I can use a specific degree rotation. That way I can "undo" the rotation by rotating it back for further edits to the group before re-rotating it. A "remove all transforms" function would alleviate the need to do it this way.)

Given this appears to be caused by the NaN, closing as duplicate of bug 1735733.
