Holding shift worked for me when moving nodes, but not when moving their handles (e.g. when trying to change the curvature of a path at a specific node, by using the node tool). That has been fixed in rev. 11791. If the shift key still doesn't behave as expected then just let us know! We might not be able to fix this in all cases because the shift-key might be taken already for other stuff, but at least we can have a look at it.
Some related fixes for live path effects and for editing objects in general have been committed in rev. 11800.
