G4JC, thank you for the additional info. If HP does not introduce support for their printers through USB->Parallel adapters, stay with your current solution to print through CUPS ("usb" backend). Do not try to set up your printer via hp-setup or with the "hp" backend (HPLIP in device selection of system-config-printer).
