Not everyone notices a small icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. One could expect to have the Trash in the Places menu, since everything else is there already. (Home folder, Desktop, Documents, Removable media...)
I agree that it is an inconsistency with Nautilus's Go menu and I personally never use the Trash icon at the bottom right on the panel. I have asked Ubuntu-illiterate users to find the Trash, and their first reaction was to go in the Places menu, not to look for an icon that looks like an empty glass of water, I mean, like a trash can. My first reaction as an experienced Ubuntu user is to add it to the Places menu using Nautilus's Bookmark menu. If "Home Folder", "Desktop" and "Computer" are there, why not "Trash"?
