I had this issue on a fresh Hardy Heron RC installation, on both gnome-terminal and xfce's Terminal.
This system in question is a notebook.
I removed the symlink to 10-no-sub-pixel.conf, and added a symlink to 10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf
Now terminal fonts look better.
I hope we get a better fix for this issue than hacking base fontconfig layout.
