I can confirm this issue.
Same problem is reported in #743859. Temporary solution (update will break it):
# cd /usr/bin/
# mv xdg-open xdg-open.backup
# ln -s exo-open xdg-open
# mv gnome-open gnome-open.backup
# ln -s exo-open gnome-open

gnome-open and xdg-open are broken when opening non-folders with them.
