Andy, we need to establish exactly in which package the bug lies. I added the gkt-engines package after a little research. I might be right, I might be wrong, I really don't know. The bug probably isn't in emacs itself anyway.
Seeing that there are just four weeks to go before Kubuntu 13.04 is released and that only three of us have acknowledged the bug I fear that it won't be fixed in time. I think there needs to be more testing to establish under what conditions emacs will or will not run and then some research done to establish which package is at fault.
I've done my bit, I believe Kubuntu's oxygen themes to be the problem.
