Bug Description

If I'm running some other app when I decide to run the updates, I will of course leave it running behind my working window, however when the first information about progress comes up, it jumps into focus and disrufts what I'm doing.

* It does not require any input
* It's doing exactly what it should be (not an error report)

So, it shouldn't take focus.

Thanks for your bugreport. I confirmed the synaptic task, but I will reject the update-manager task because it uses synaptic as its backend so one task is enough.

Thanks,

I would add that this is an issue because, for the update manager, its focus stealing can lead to system breakage. If you are typing something, and update manager steals focus, those keys can trigger buttons in Update Manager's question dialogs.

This focus stealing problem is really annoying in IM clients where focus gets stolen from your conversation window by the contacts window when one of your friends logs in or out... this can happen every few seconds.

Synaptic also steals focus from other windows when it is minimized: both the main window and the dialog window un-minimize themselves, and the dialog window puts itself in front of everything else.

summary: - should stay in background when told to
+ Synaptic steals focus when minimized or when behind other windows

Anything I can do to help this? Is it possible to write a custom rule for Compiz to make Synaptic get out of the damned way?

I've just tried to reproduce this problem in Ubuntu 10.10 and can't. So I'm marking this as 'invalid' for "Synaptic in Ubuntu". Please reopen this if you can reproduce this issue.

I have not checked this with the default update-manager dialog. It would be good someone could check that.
