the proposed 4.1 update to network-manager-gnome ubuntu fixed my issues.
-Imported ovpn file using network manager - success
-Used applet to connect vpn - success
-Applet icon animated during connection - success
-Tested connectivity - success
-Used applet to disconnect vpn - success

Tests run on Ubuntu 14.04 (AMD64+Mac)
