I'm using experimental (now with the unstable mozilla-firefox, which
seems to be newer), XDM, and removing all of my "mozilla-ish"
directories (.mozilla, .firefox, .phoenix) doesn't seem to fix it.

I also have this problem. Something interesting i found is that if you run
firefox with strace it seems to work although it will stop responding after
a while. I started firefox like this:

This really, really looks like something more fundamentally wrong with
your X configuration. Is any other X application exhibiting strange
behavior?=20

mozilla-firefox is the only one with problems. A colleague of mine had
the same problems with firefox, but for him purging and reinstalling all
firefox-related packages helped.

Mozilla had it, but upgrading helped there for me as well.

Could it have something to do with upgrading from an xterm, or using xdm
as the display manager?

I use xdm to setup my X sessions, and I also had this problem. So I started
X with startx and firefox runs normally again as in 0.8.

I just dont know where the problem lies but it sure is connected with xdm.

It has something to do with xdm. After switching to gdm, the problem is
gone.

I've just tried wdm (from sid, all my system is running sid) and it works
ok. I also tried xdm again and it worked too which i found strange but then
i did the following wich brings some new facts (at least to me): deleting
the .mozilla dir (created by firefox, just after i had made the switch to
kdm due to not being able to start it when using xdm), this prevents
firefox from running (with the error already mentioned), using xdm. wdm and
kdm both work ok with or without a .mozilla dir in place.

I think a little more homework needs to be done on the firefox end before
this bug is laid at X's doorstep.

Please review the full bug logs of this report before arguing. :)

Bug #246313 in bugzilla is probably this same problem

For me it happens if I'm logged in via XDM and lack a firefox profile
when I start it. After the profile is created I have no problems.

The problem arises from the existance of an XDM-AUTHORIZATION key in my
.XAuthority file when I log in via XDM. If I remove that key (even
logged in through XDM) the bug won't show up.

Simon Bowden's fix in comment #12 on bugzilla also fixes the problem if
I start firefox without a profile and the XDM-AUTH key exists.
His fix is running it as:
XRE_IMPORT_PROFILES=1 firefox

What my colleague means here is that doesn't make any sense. Could you
try uninstalling mozilla-browser just to see if that has any effect.=20

Yes, I am sure firefox worked yesterday after reinstalling mozilla-browser,
but it doesn't work anymore. I tried to (un/re)install firefox, but I didn't
managed to make it work again.

When I manage to launch firefox, I will send a report tell you how.

I had the same problem. Here is a workaround that worked for me:
Install mozilla-firefox first, then install xdm. If you have already installed xdm, remove it, reboot, run firefox, install xdm again. Now you should have managed to run firefox and xdm.

given the choice of a new installation not starting up at all, and
not getting an old profile imported, i'd choose the working new
installation TYVM.

best of course would be that upstream fixes bugzilla #246313...sigh.

your making it difficult to report any fucking problems,i can,t find anywhere to report several problems,1, ubuntu 10.10 will not load files to usb pendrive,however this is better that ubuntu 10.04 which dosen,t function at all,waste of space back to 10.10 when its first updates it uploads flash ?this in turn stops the flash in mozilla working, so you don,t get to play any video,s,thats enough for now,i,m writing this report on ubuntu 9.10 ,which i refused to update because once you update,you get a load of shite, which reminds me of running windows
