yes, the recreated repositories are in 2a format.

All of the clients were updated at the same time
(bzr fora also states the newest latest and greatest release is always backwards compatible, so I believed them)

I didn't tun bzr check -v before now

I have now:

So this is bzr 2.2.0 running on the original (broken) working tree created under 1.10
