For the benefit of people reading the comments on this bug, branch and checkout no longer use "accelerator" trees by default (as of lp:bzr r5358, which will be in bzr 2.3b1). See bug 607298.

So judging by comment #18 of this bug using bzr trunk should give noticeably better results.
