Hmm, okay, something is funny in your configuration. Do you have anything in your ~/.screenrc or ~/.byoburc?

Also, could you either:
 1) tar up your ~/.byobu directory and attach it here
 2) or blow it away, and let byobu recreate it anew? rm -rf ~/.byobu/*
