Thank you for responding. I'll try to do a better job of being as specific as I can.

At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem; This doesn't happen every time, but the way I see it it shldn't happen at all. I boot up. After logging in, the mouse cursor's in the middle of the screen, as it shld be. 2. the behavior you expected; I expected the mouse cursor to act normal =)

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible); When I try to navigate my mouse cursor, it "skitters" all over the screen. When I say "skittering", I mean the mouse cursor moves abt like a drop of water on a red hot skillet. I have zero control over it. I can't even navigate the cursor to the shutdown/restart in the upper right screen. And as it skitters abt, it opens apps like crazy. Dozens and dozens. It stops, of course, when I stop trying to navigate it. I'm running a Sony VAIO with dual 2.0 ghz processors, 4 gigs of ram. My hardware's good. But there's something to be said abt the mouse cursor's behavior. Again, this is occasional, maybe 4 or 5 times out 10 bootups. Hope this is more useful. And thanks again for responding. Is this issue occurring with an external mouse or an internal touchpad? If it's a touchpad that's experiencing the issue, can you please tell us whether it is manufactured by Synaptic or not?

You can find out the manufacturer of the input device by running in a terminal:

xinput list

It's touchpad. How will I know if it's by Synaptic?

Timothy, I appreciate your help. But the last msg you sent is beyond me. Are you telling me there's a way tp change my mouse control from p/s 2 to something more stable?
 And if so, how? I'm sort of lacking in the know-how on this. Thank you.

This was filed against the wrong driver package. -mouse is no longer maintained; mice are managed via the -evdev driver and touchpads via -synaptics now.

I know this is old and my answer is probably simple and obvious but under Settings/Mouse and Touchpad (I am using XFCE/Lubuntu), I had three devices simultaneously enabled: A Mouse, A dual-point Stick and a Touch Pad - As I am using a Dell Laptop with only a touchpad, disabling the other two devices and disabling the extra touch-pad features quieted everything down for me.

New to running Linux, I was running it under wubi. As soon as Windows
crashed and I formatted my drive and installed Linux Mint ONLY, the
problem was no more =) Thanks though.

Floyd, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.
