Bug Description

Binary package hint: libreoffice

When opening documents (From the "File" menu), in Writer it takes approx 14-15 seconds to open and will frequently dim the window. Calc also takes 15 secs to open documents with the same dimming affect. In Windows, with the same files, I was able to open them in 3-4 seconds. I ran the same tests in Maverick, and I opened the documents in 4-5 seconds.

The lag seems to be in Natty.

Please find attached the files I used to test.

I cannot confirm this. Is it slow to open every time or just the first?
Are you using Unity or the classic desktop?
Do you have lo-menubar installed?

Does it occur if you start a guest session and try there?

I gave that a go and it looks like I get the same issue. Also, I've run the same tests on my laptop, media center & file server (all running Natty w Unity) and they all get the same issue.

People, I'm running LibreOffice on 11.04 64-bit and suddenly I am getting the same behaviour, no fix, either turning off Java or increasing memory, nothing works. Tried to open locally mounted or nfs files either clicking on the folder or openng i from the menu, the result is always the same. It happens every time. About 20-30 seconds for Writer to load each file.

Hello again

This behaviour does not occur in kde. On kde files load instantly, regardless of if i click the file in konqueror, thunar or other file manager.

one more remark, writer is the problem, on spreadsheets and drawings could not establish an accurate replication. Writer files are the problem (2-3minutes load now). Tried to fiddle with permissions without the result being conclusive. Turned auto-save off as well, no result.

Hi

At last, I got it, I have 2 identical writer files, one loading instantly, the other taking ages to load. a.odt loads instantly, while you may enjoy a cup of coffee loading b.odt

I hope it helps

Cheers

Antonio

Ants, unreproducible in Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit, LO Writer via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/772131/+attachment/2240138/+files/example.zip && file-roller -h example.zip && cd example && lowriter -nologo b.odt a.odt

both files opened in a couple seconds each.

affirmative on 64-bit. Chris is right. If I do it only over the command-line, both files load fast. If I do it once double-clicking in nautilus (as a regular user would do) I get the error, and then, if I do it again over the command-line, I get the error as well.

Ants, Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 772131
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

As well, please answer the following questions:

+ What are the full hardware specifications for the pc you have Natty installed on?
+ When you ran your test with Windows, what version of Windows and LibreOffice were you using and was Windows installed on the same pc as the one Natty is on?
+ When you ran your test in Maverick, was it installed on the same pc you have Natty on?

Ran the following tests using:

cd ~/Desktop && wget -c https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/772131/+attachment/2092343/+files/Untitled%201.doc -O info.doc

1) Opening it from the Terminal:

lowriter info.doc

took the same amount of time as not having LO open and clicking the file, or having a blank Writer file open and clicking File -> Open -> info.doc, approximately 14 seconds.
2) It took the least amount of time (~ 7 seconds) if one opens via the Terminal:

lowriter -nologo info.doc
