read aloud fail in Safari

Jeff, I'm having trouble reproducing this.

Is this happening with all books for you, or this there a particular book that is failing?

I can reproduce on the QA machine (Safari 5.0.2 / OS X 10.6.4) but not on my mac (Safari 5.0 / OS X 10.6.4).

(Can reproduce on all books on the QA machine.)

The problem I was seeing on Safari 5.0.2 was due to broken HTML 5 audio support in Safari (and QT underneath: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32159). Upgrading to version V2.97a.20101010 of SoundManager2 fixes this.

Jeff originally reported this problem with Safari 4.0.3, so I will try to test there as well.

Well, read aloud on Jeff's machine failed in the same way it failed on the QA machine, so without thinking too hard, I applied the same fix. Jeff had OS X 10.6.0, so I modified SoundManager2 to disable html5 audio for Safari on all versions of OS X 10.6. Before, only 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 were being treated as broken..

We don't have a great amount of test coverage on this. What about on OS X 10.5? And updating soundmanager means retesting read aloud on all platforms. Also, it is hard to get Safari to force reload of the new soundmanager swfs, even though it loads the new js....

Checked soundmanager updates into the petabox tree. moving to triaged.

Please check the Read Aloud feature on Safari on OSX 10.5 (Leopard) as well as other platforms.

Have tested several books, all read aloud as expected including turning pages to continue.

Read aloud not working/loading in IE7 or IE8.

Minor quibble: starting read aloud while page is turning in autoflip results in previous page being read while you are looking at the subsequent page.

I get "Could not load soundManager 2" after pressing the speaker icon on IE7/XP.

Jeff can you provide more details on IE8? We need the steps to reproduce and what you saw when the error happened.

Fix has been pushed to the petabox tree, and after the full-text reindexing, we can't reproduce any IE8 read aloud issues. closing.
