Please remove the model quirk (model=asus) that you added.

Can you confirm, then, that you need position_fix=0, too?

The ALC887 has a driver bug that tries to put volume controls on the wrong nid, I'm working on a fix. I'm not sure if that solves your problem entirely.

You can now try the following:
1) make sure you have a clean system, e g no model quirk (remove "model=asus" from /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, or possibly another file you added it to)
2) Download and install http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-diwic-alc887-mixer-dkms_1.0.23.diwic_all.deb
3) Reboot and test.

The thing is, this line must have been added manually somewhere, e g in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but it could have been in another file as well. To edit that file, e g open a terminal and enter this command:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Hi David,

I'm directed here from a duplicated bug I posted here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/680381

I tried following your above steps, but I still can't get any sound on my system.

1. There was no "model" word at all in my alsa-base.conf so I didn't have to remove anything.
2. I've installed the .deb you linked above.
3. After rebooting, tried running some live radio stream but couldn't get any sound at all - in fact I can't hear the usual login jingle when I logged in into Ubuntu.

Nothing with the model asus as you can see. And trust me I did not add a model manually to any line.

I think I have the same alsa-base.conf as Richard has posted.

Also @Daniel, I ran that command on my system and got the following:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:40:# replaced by asus-laptop (Ubuntu: #184721)
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:41:blacklist asus_acpi

Not sure if Richard would find the same thing or not.

Problem solved. Never actually figured out how to remove the model=asus from the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base but I suppose I didnt have to.

I installed the linux-alsa-driver-modules package from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules (I assume this is the patch?) but I still couldn't get any sound on my system. Note that I'm not using any external speakers at all, but using my earphones that I connected to the jack.

The earphones do work at home and functions normally - it doesn't work on my work PC (that's running on Ubuntu 10.10 where I'm encountering this problem) and this stumps me.

this all sounds very similar to my problem (Bug # 682157) so i was directed to this bug.

My hardware seam different in some aspects, mainly i have a desktop not a laptop and my mother board's from Gigabyte, but my sound card is; alc887

I have ran that new patch "David Henningsson" mentioned in comment #12, but like "Clement" (in comment #19) I still have Zero audio in or out

Any one need any more information just ask, or send me the command line which would harvest required info.

If it's a different motherboard, it's very very very likely a different bug.
