Bug Description

This is especially important with larger maps (2 players on 512x512), where I might have as many as 22661 land, and dozens of mine areas. I'd like to tag a mine area with something "nothing but granite here". Or tag a microbrewery with "don't destroy until we have a master brewer". These tags should also be saved/restored across sessions.

Being able to have notes attached to buildings or parts of the map would be interesting. However, based on the discussion in bug 559854 (especially comment #3) it seems these notes would be lost when the construction site is finished or the building is enhanced. So attaching the notes to buildings might not be the best approach, as they would probably disappear when enhancing the building or when the construction site is finished.

Alternatively, messages in the message window already have the ability to store some text and link it up with an area on the map. Perhaps this could be reused, and players given the ability to write/edit the text and select the location on the map the note points to? This might also make it possible to link the notes to areas on the map, not necessarily buildings, which could come in handy if I'm planning out what to build in an area outside my territory or want to mark where the enemy came out of the fog of war when they attacked me.

I feel this would add a lot of complexity to the UI and has little gain; so I consider it a bit of a feature creep. Vote for Won't fix.

Fair enough. No objections to Won't fix. :)

I have thought a bit about this, and I agree this will probably not justify the work it will require.

To address part of the problem though, Marty: What I usually do after the geologist have marked what resources are available in a mountain is to place at least one mine there with the correct type. If this is not connected to the roads it will not be built, but stay as a remainder of the resource present. Later in the game when I need it, I can of course connect it to the roads and it will be built.

I'm setting this to Incomplete which will cause it to eventually expire, unless someone speaks up.

I had wished for some way to create reminders inside WL many times.
I tend to play very long games on big or even huge maps, and often come back to them after weeks.
There is currently absolutely no way, to save any reminders inside the game, and not even any way to see the coordinates for referencing.
So I am writing long clumsy directory notes for my games, if I need to remember some things. This is not a good way.

As a final attempt to save this suggestion, that I like for the functionality it introduces, and accepting that the complexity of the UI should increase as little as possible, I have a modified version for reconsideration and discussion. I hope it does not mean too much effort:

Add a button to the action menu, that would open a small window allowing to enter some text.
When the window is closed, it checks, whether something was written.
If yes, it saves the text and places a pigeon on top of the flag, as a graphical reminder that there is a note for this position.

Reading a note would be invoked the same way as creating one.
Deleting all text inside the edit window, would replace the
"Pigeon on flag" picture with the normal flag.
Deleting a flag would also delete the attached message.
