Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
Our upgrade test instructions ask users to save certain system state (for example, dpkg -l) before running an upgrade, as this can be useful in diagnosing upgrade problems. Rather than relying on the user to do this, it would be great if update-manager could save this information automatically before starting an operation. Then, apport hooks and the like could simply look for the saved information and attach it to bug reports.

Thanks for the suggestion, this is implemented now in bzr and will be part of the next upload. It saves a copy of /var/lib/ dpkg/status plus sources.list and apt preferences prior to the upgrade to be able to fully re-create failed upgrades.
