does this also happen if you call 'mplayer' on the commandline, or only if you use the gmplayer, the gui variant that is also used when you open via nautilus?

also, does the problem disappear if you use the alsa backend instead of the pulse backend?

This bug was fixed in the package mplayer - 2:1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1

  * no longer build mplayer-gui, it doesn't build anymore with shared
    swscale
