Bug Description

Showing and sorting by popularity is a key feature for any category with a lot of entries, like music players or games, and especially for new users.

See bug #237254 for similar issues on synaptic--but this seems more urgent for software-store than synaptic.

<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#popular>: "On the home screen, the “What’s Popular” area should use tiles to list, in descending order, the 12 most popular items that are not currently installed and that are not already shown in the “Top Rated” section..."

I would recommend not just voting but voting plus reviews( amazon.com style), possibly using launchpad to store the reviews. Plus make it easy to submit reviews(to be moderator approved) through the software store.
Plus possibly sorting based on voting (such as top average score of all time and of last month)

We should do it like the Android Market does. When you select an application you have its overall votes (1-5 stars) plus the latest user reviews, preferably in the user's language. Also, if you have installed the app it lets you vote for it as well as write a review.

As Roman says, the reviews could be stored in Launchpad, separated by language.

IMHO, the David & Roman suggestions (a popularity sort, a voting and reviewing system) are essential to make the software-center more user friendly and to aggregate more value to it.

For 2.0 we are (hopefully) adding ratings and reviews, which is probably a bit more important than popularity, because it can help identify great but lesser-known software. (That OpenOffice.org is popular doesn't necessarily mean people like it that much.)

Once we've got that implemented thoroughly, we'll look at showing popularity separately. In the meantime, if you're interested in hacking on Launchpad, you could help out by fixing 139855 -- because one prerequisite for doing it well will be to show popularity for PPAs, not just for items in the Ubuntu repositories.

Changed in software-center (Ubuntu):
milestone: none → later
importance: Medium → Wishlist

Rating and reviews has been implemented into software-center however there is no way to sort by popularity which makes it hard to quickly sort the good from the average.

A large database of the applications sorted by popularity are available on http://popcon.ubuntu.com/
Why you don't use it?
Why USC does not have a button for switching from alphabeticly sorted list to sort by rating?

USC5 shows "Top Rated" applications, both overall and in individual categories. It also lets you sort search results by rating.

Sorting by actual popularity, as in which things are installed by more people, is planned for the next major update.

Is this still planned? Comment #7 has been around for more than a year now.

USC really needs to give more options to discover apps, i.e sorting them by different criteria (Top rated, Newest and Name, but also popularity, latest update, licence type...)

No, it is no longer planned. However, anyone is welcome to implement it themselves. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#popular>
