Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Scenario 1: i am dragging a file from one of my home directories to a bookmarked ftp destination on the sidebar. Nautilus's main window disppears with just a small note on the task-bar saying 'Starting ftp'. Several seconds later the task-bar entry disappears and so does Nautilus. I happen to know this ftp server is unresponsive every few requests but Nautilus is also unresponsive during this time and there's no dialog confirming what it's doing that i can 'quit' out of or 'cancel'. Sometimes i get an error saying 'Error copying this file, Retry or Skip' but more often than not i i have to brute-force restart Nautilus and navigate back to where i started and do the thing again. Also during this time i cannot do any other operations that involve Nautilus.

Scenario 2: i save a local file in my editor and navigate to Nautilus which is in the middle of redrawing some files listed in the main window. Working fast i quickly drag a file over to the same bookmarked ftp location sidebar still during Nautilus redrawing and as soon as i release the mouse button Nautilus has disappeared.

This is a bit crippling as i'm working on PHP scripts that are complicated to debug and am losing time waiting for Nautilus to respond and having to manually restart each time this is happening.

Obviously i appreciate i should be smart and set-up my PHP scripts locally to avoiding FTP bottlenecks but time i can't afford at the moment.

I would appreciate any help!! :)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I've just done that, and reproduced the disappearing behaviour in Nautilus. One thing, i was wrong about it saying 'Starting FTP', it was actually saying 'Starting File Browser'.

(then disappears.)

I reproduced the problem exactly as i describe to you * twice* and then had al look in the /var/crash directory immediately and both times the directory was completely empty. Just to make sure i had a look with a terminal not just Nautilus in case files were hidden or something. It's quite fustrating because the cursor goes into a 'wait' cursor and you can't do anything while Nautilus is waiting for something.

(then it disappears).

Sorry i can't give any more help here. This problem is relatively straight forward tol reproduce, but i definetely haven't seen any kind of a report.

Many thanks. :)

Hi Pedro,

Thanks for taking time to read my report. I have added further comments to
the report as I have been unable to follow the steps recommended by you.
Full information is in the report but basically there is no crash report,
Nautilus just disappears after a short stall when this problem occurs.

If you need me to forward the report on this e-mail or re-submit the report
as a new report please let me know either way, I will do so accordingly.

Many thanks,
Pablo.
