Error activating XKB configuration (breezy)

I logged in and got the following error message:

Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

This installation was made as follows: install Colony 2, apt-get dist-upgrade to
current.
The reason I upgraded was because the session was hanging when I logged in.
That problem has indeed gone away, but it did mean I had to forcibly terminate
my Gnome session a couple of times, which is why I mention it.
