x86/kvm: fix LAPIC timer drift when guest uses periodic mode

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1778486

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I built a test kernel with the patch in the description. The test kernel can be downloaded from:

Note about installing test kernels:
• If the test kernel is prior to 4.15(Bionic) you need to install the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
• If the test kernel is 4.15(Bionic) or newer, you need to install the linux-modules, linux-modules-extra and linux-image-unsigned .deb packages.

I tested the kernel with OpenBSD and FreeBSD virtual machines and this patch seems to fix the timing issues.

If I'm not mistaken, the fix has been released with the latest kernel update that was pushed for the L1TF issue. So this bug should be "fix released"

The fix is not present in -32. It seems to be scheduled for -33.
