Unable to install Kubuntu 16.04

I cannot reproduce this exactly. I had one computer that would not boot to an X environement. But was able to startx. Nvidia card. Installed on computer with Intel card no problem.

In short, we need those logs to be able to get anywhere on this bug.

Well, since I can't even start a terminal I don't see how the suggestion could work. Since the system did not start, I did not find a way to use ubuntu-bug.

Alt + F2 will get you into a terminal. Even a photo of all these plasma errors will be better than nothing.

Yes, I understand that you must have additional information.

Sorry, but Alt + F2 does not work. Just messages about additional crashes (krunner if I remember correctly).
I might however have found another way. I burned a DVD from the ISO and tried to start Kubuntu. It did not work either, but there are some messages on the screen that might/might not be useful, see the attached image. I will try some more experiments to retrieve more information and I am open to suggestions.

ALT+F2 opens KRunner - It's ALT+CTRL+F2 _this opens a virtual Console (TTY2) to return you press ALT + F7

In TTY2 you could just login username: kubuntu password: just leave it blank

Once you are loooged in type "startx" (w/o marks)

Then you could toogle to /var/log/

interesting would be gpu-manager.log

Sorry, but ALT+CTRL+F2 takes me nowhere. Just a blinking prompt with no possibility to issue any commands. No virtual console. Therefore I can't startx or reach /var/log/.

I have a discrete Nvidia card, desktop, and Intel graphics on my laptop.

It's weird since I have now tested the new daily build of Xubuntu (20160419) and it's working flawlessly. It's just Kubuntu that is affected.

I have downloaded the latest daily build of Kubuntu (20160419) and put the ISO on my thumb drive. The same plasma crashes. The good thing is that if booting from USB I am able to reach the console via ALT+CTRL+F2. The bad thing is that startx does not work. There is just another crash message: "All shell packages missing. This is an installation issue, please contact your distribution". Sounds kind of bad...

I'll see if I can reach some logs under /var/log/ so far no luck.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I tried the installation in 20160419 and 20160420 of Kubuntu 16.04 LTS Daily Build ISO.
It failed to start Plasma in the result multiple environments.

I will put a screenshot taken by VirtualBox.

When I upgraded from Kubuntu 15.10 to 16.04 LTS, this bug did not encounter.
This bug is encountered when performing the installation from the Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (Daily Build) ISO.

Seeing this on a Kubuntu 16.04 installed a few weeks ago from the beta2 install CD. This installation worked fine until today, I am getting a pop-up after logging in:

Plasma Cannot Start - Plasma

All shell packages missing.
This is an installation issue, please contact your distribution

Krunner works in my case and I can start programs like this.

Downgrading to plasma-desktop-data_5.5.4-0ubuntu1_all.deb seems to solve the problem for me.

Correction, downgrading to plasma-desktop-data_5.5.4-0ubuntu1_all.deb made the pop-up go away, and I could start plasmashell again. However, my panel was still messed up and clicking kickoff produced an error.

I then noticed that plasma-desktop was not installed (showed rc in dpkg -l), so I manually installed plasma-desktop_5.5.4-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb and now everything seems fine after logging out and in again.

I can partly reproduce this from an earlier Virtualbox installation. After update Kubuntu started and plasma-desktop was still installed. kubuntu-desktop was however missing and by installing it a bunch of other packages was reinstalled too. So perhaps the latest plasma removed vital packages.

I have now tested the final 16.04 ISO. The problem remains, making Kubuntu uninstallable.

I should perhaps have mentioned earlier that I use the 64-bit ISO:s.

So, I retested the final images (20160420.1) in both Virtualbox and on my nvidia optimus notebook.

The virtualbox session crashes the install/live session screen (known issue) and threw me into a fully functional plasma session. While kubuntu-desktop is indeed not installed, the installation itself worked fine, and after resetting the system I had no problems booting it.

On my notebook (on the intel GPU), the live session experience was exactly the same, but I did no install test.

It would be great if someone with such a failed system could try to get a wired network connection, and run 'ubuntu-bug ubiquity' from there and open the bug reporting URL from another system (or write it down).

If switching to a TTY doesn't work, The recovery mode from the GRUB "Advanced options from ubuntu" section has an option to drop you to a root shell. That should gather enough logs to tell us why plasma-desktop etc. was missing.

If you still cannot file a bug with apport with that, try to at least get the logs from /var/log/installer and /var/log/apt - that can even be done from a Kubuntu 15.10 live session

I was confirmed a new situation in this problem. It is to encounter this bug in the "language-dependent".

I was to proceed with the installation in English, was able to start up properly.
But I installed under the same conditions in 日本語(Japanese). As a result encountered in this problem.

Try you install in language other than English in order to confirm this problem.

I can confirm this is a problem on my system too. I have booted to the 16.04 LTS release ISO on a USB stick, and I get three separate Plasma crash screens, all invalid instruction exceptions.

System details: Asus H110M-A motherboard, 16GB RAM, Intel core i3, Nvidia GTX950.

dmesg reports that after 19 seconds or so the "nouveau" process has crashed. Engine 7 client 6 reason 2 channel 2

I switched to internal graphics and it then worked OK, so it looks like it's an issue with the NVIDIA graphics drivers. I will try installing it in this mode, then update the drivers and report back.

Upgraded 14.04LTS to 16.04LTS and now I have the same issue.
Downgrading to plasma-desktop-data_5.5.4-0ubuntu1_all.deb does NOT solve the problem for me.

If you install kde-l10n-nl it removes plasma-desktop and plasma-desktop-data
What a show-stopper

1. Attach "/var/log/installer" and "/var/log/apt".
2. Set this bug status back to "confirmed".

Since I am not used to this kind of work it took some time to retrieve them. Perhaps someone could have guided me.

Some further experiment show that nomodeset in grub makes Kubuntu boot to the screen where you choose to "Try Kubuntu" or "Install Kubuntu". If you choose "Try Kubuntu" the Live session crashes as before. I have not tried the Install option. This is my production machine and I can not experiment on it.

Bug still there after upgarding the latest packages.

I have just tested. Installing Kubuntu in english does not show the problem. So it is a problem of localization with non-english languages.

Yes I think I have found the problem, It looks like several of my packages were missed in the upload. I had to get these sponsored.

I can sponsor your uploads, I believe the right way is to get them uploaded to yakety and then to xenial where a archive admin will approve them.

Can you perhaps perpare a archive of what needs uploaded for both yakety and xenial?

Tried the PPA suggested in #34 and #36 but it didn't work. Of course I substituted IT for NL but the system complained that packages were already up to date and nothing changed. I'll be reinstalling shortly.

I'm having this issue right after Kubuntu boots from a USB, before I get the ability to install kubuntu plasma crashes. I've attached the contents of /var/log.

kubuntu 16.04 is about 2 months out, and there is still no installable version? dpkg status of plasma-desktop is rc and there is no way to change it because it conflicts with language and other files. That problem actually appeared already in one of the previous releases, but misteriously disappeared again. But now already the installer is broken and the packaging system's force and ignore options, which did exist in the past, are gone as well...

This bug got fixed with the updates coming from bug #1576455 "SRU kde-language-packs mismatch".

Pls see comment #13 there.

I downloaded Kubuntu once more and run the installer and it crashed exactly like before. It is still impossible to install Kubuntu. So nothing is fixed. Should you not at least distribute new ISO:s?

Since the crash happens before any language selection I believe that there are different bugs in play. I can not install Kubuntu even in English and I don't think this bug is a duplicate of 1576455.

Removed the duplicate marker. The translation issue only appears once you are already in the installer sequence. But for that you at least need to get a working Live Session first.

just a question instead:

Did you tick the option "Download updates during the Installation"?

Hence I had recently a successful installation this was marked as duplicate.

New ISO's will come with 16.04.1 (somewhat around 27th of July), until then this option "updates during installation" has to serve.

The problem is that it never achieves the installation step, it crashes before being able to launch the installer

I have no chance to tick any alternatives. The Installation never starts. Thus there are no installation logs either.
As I posted in comment 30 I suspect the bug is related to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/llvm-toolchain-3.8/+bug/1564156 and has nothing to do with missing language packs. Since there are an alternative in Ubuntu and other Buntu flavors to install without starting the live session, it is possible to install and download necessary updated during installation despite the bug (as I am able to verify). Since this is not possible in Kubuntu, users with modern hardware similar to mine are stuck.
I think it is really bad to release a LTS-version with such a bug.

I can confirm this is related to llvm bug (at least in my case) and seems to happen on i7 skylake (6th generation). I have 16.04 live image installed on usb and had the same problem - illegal instruction in plasma. I managed to solve this simply by updating libllvm3.8 from 1:3.8-2ubuntu1 to 1:3.8-2ubuntu3 (i had persistent storage enabled on the usb).

Once 16.04.1 iso is out, this will probably be resolved as it should (hopefully) contain updated version of libllvm.

I have a new installation of KDE neon as based on the Kubuntu 16.04 LTS.
As a result, KDE neon is started successfully.
I think there is improvement, even Kubuntu from this result, after I was live started in Kubuntu 16.04 ISO,
also put the following command in Konsole:

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install ubiquity (not "upgrade")

Then was installed, Kubuntu has booted successfully.

This problem seems to be in ubiquity.
Because you are starting the ubiquity before you run the "Download updates during the Installation",
it does not solve. Run the apt.

I installed Kubuntu 16.04.1 in Japanese.
As a result, Kubuntu that was installed was able to start up normally.
This problem appears to be solved.

I thought that I should put this bug to rest once and for all. Kubuntu 16.04.01 starts OK from an USB stick and I imagine it will install too. Since I have another working system, I will not test any further. I consider this unfortunate bug solved one way or another.
