HI David,

you're not the only one that experiences the same problem - we also saw a lot of other report, that people seem to have similar problems with Ubuntu 13.10, but we don't really have a good explanation for that. We also tested it ourself by installing a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 version (not updated, PC contains a Nvidia graphic card), and didn't notice any problem at all.

***********************************************************************************************
If you experience a similar problem, you can try to use the workaround provided below. Nevertheless
we would really like to get the following information from as many people as possible to compare
the results and find out what causes the problems. Thanks for your time!
***********************************************************************************************

In order to determine what exactly causes the problems on 13.10, please attach:

1) The output of the following command:
dpkg --list | grep "\(wine-.*-installer\|wine-compholio\|pipelight\)" | sed 's/ \+ /\t/g' | cut -f2-3;

2) The full output of:
glxinfo

3) The output of:
lspci | grep VGA

4) Logs when running the browser with (you can replace firefox with chromium/google-chrome/... or whatever you prefer):
firefox &> ~/pipelight-1.log

5) and with (all in one line!):
WINEDEBUG=+d3d9,+d3d,+wgl firefox &> ~/pipelight-2.log

WORKAROUND: Please note that this workaround will stay active until you manually deactivate it again.

Hi,

error N8109 is related to a wrong user agent, see: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pipelight/+bug/1213672
Take a look at this FAQ how to install one: https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+faq/2351 - if you already have installed one, you probably have to select again FF15 after the update?

BTW:
Your logs seem to be a bit incomplete, the pipelight-1 and pipelight-2 logs just contain "command not found", which means you haven't inserted the correct name of the browser you're using. Depending on your browser this can be "chromium-browser", "chromium", "google-chrome", ...

Just forgot to mention: the previous UA switcher most likely does not work anymore for Chromium 13.10 (as written in the FAQ). You'll have to set the user agent via commandline (or use a different browser).

You can always use our diagnostic page to check the current UA string: http://fds-team.de/pipelight/
when everything is correct it should be: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20120427 Firefox/15.0a1

Admittedly, I am a newbie to Linux. Just reran the commands with
"chromium-browser" and each command opened a new Chromium window. All the
logs contained after I browsed to Netflix and got the crash were this line:

Created new window in existing browser session.

Help me with what I am doing wrong and I will get the info to you. And I
really appreciate your help!!!

Ironically, I created a dual boot machine with one of my stronger PCs on
the network and Pipelight is working fine on it.

I have tried this on both Chromium and Firefox with the same result. I
know this stronger PC has a different video adapter and am betting that is
the difference

You should get the desired output when you close all other browser windows first. If you still just get the message, that a new browser window was opened, you probably have to kill the remaining background instances manually, e.g. with:

killall chromium-browser

but in most cases it should be sufficient to close all browser windows. The debug output would especially be useful when it crashes. To make it crashing again, just re-enable GPU acceleration with:

/usr/share/pipelight/pipelight-hw-accel --enable

then create the logs, and after this re-enable the workaround such that you're still able to use pipelight in the meantime.

Did you try to set the UA string via commandline to fix the error N8109? This remaining problem is unrelated to the crash, but also caused by a change in Ubuntu 13.10, which breaks most (or all) existing user agent switchers. For Chromium you can use the following workaround (again close all other browser windows first):

chromium-browser --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20120427 Firefox/15.0a1"

Thanks for the logs, this definitely should help to track down the error.

Concerning error N8109: Did you check with the diagnostic page, if you haven't done yet, and post the output of it (of course when the workaround is enabled)? http://fds-team.de/pipelight/

If the diagnostic page says "Okay" everywhere, then try to do:

rm -rf ~/.wine-pipelight

to ensure that there are no corrupt files remaining, and try again.

Hi,

I did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 13.10 on my computer with an NVIDIA graphic card and had the same problem. As I already expected the problem is not directly related to Pipelight but is caused by bad graphic drivers. The current stable version of the NVIDIA driver had problems with 32 bit applications and I could solve this by upgrading to the newest beta version (331.17). For some reason the same stable driver and kernel worked with Ubuntu 12.04, so I think the problem must be related to the newer Xorg/Mesa version.

We can not do much about this as the problems is somewhere in Ubuntu or in the graphic drivers, but I would recommend to disable hardware acceleration till the problem is fixed and try to re-enable it on the next update of the graphic drivers.

I'm also having trouble getting Netflix video to play after upgrading to 13.10. I can login into Netflix and select a video, but once I hit play, the firefox tab goes black and I get a popup notification that says "the program pluginloader.exe has experienced a problem and needs to close". This happens in both Firefox and Chrome. I've tried all the steps in list in the FAQ here: https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+faq/2348
But it doesn't help. I've run the the pipelight diagnostic tool and every looks okay (user agent, etc.).

When I ran the terminal commands you suggested and I got this as an (partial) output for firefox &> ~/pipelight-1.log:

I got the same error:

[PIPELIGHT:LIN:silverlight5.1] ../common/common.c:252:readCommands(): unable to receive data.

###!!! [Parent][RPCChannel] Error: Channel error: cannot send/recv

I noticed Davide Wike had the same error in his pipelight-1.log file. Maybe this problem with "../common/common.c:252:readCommands(): unable to receive data." should be it's own bug?

For whatever reason, the work around listed here for disabling HW acceleration didn't work, but the instructions listed here did:

Now netflix works! Though HW acceleration would be nice :)

Hi all,

today someone joined our IRC channel who also had trouble with the Intel drivers. The pluginloader didn't crash but the fps was very low although the Intel driver was working correctly. After switching to a newer version of xorg / mesa stack using the "Updated and Optimized Open Graphics Drivers" by oibaf ( https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/ ) the problem was gone.

So it may be worth for you to try the same and check whether it solves the problem. Anyway I need to warn you that this PPA is not officially supported by Ubuntu and that you may not be able to boot into the GUI mode if something goes wrong, so you should know how to return to the old packages in this case. If you are running 13.10 (the PPA provides only packages for 13.10) and you want to continue nevertheless, execute the following steps:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and reboot to make the changes take effect. Finally check whether Pipelight works with GPU Acceleration enabled (Don't forget to execute /usr/share/pipelight/configure-silverlight and enable hardware acceleration again!)

Hi Sebastian (slackner), I'm having the same issue and I currently have Ubuntu 14.04. Since I upgraded to Suacy Salamander the issue has been on and off but I still don't understand why and I'd really appreciate your thoughts / comments / support, if possible, with this. Please find below my outputs for the indicated commands in Comment #2. Is there anything I need to do to fix the issue in my system?
Thanks in advance for any help I can get.
