This is nothing new, really. Happened with Hardy as well (because of kernel side changes).
It seems that the folks at X.Org are doing things to make mice really work, but so far there is no possibility to harness the functionality.
I have coding the new btnx C++ version on my spare time that changes almost everything about how btnx works, for the better. Hopefully I can still hook onto the input system (this shouldn't change, it's kernel side stuff), otherwise there is no point in developing the new or old version of btnx.
If I have time, I will try to see what has changed.
