I have this problem on two laptops: Lenovo R50e and HP Compaq 6735b. The same story: system shutdowns or reboots only through terminal or if Open Office quick starter is disabled.
I definitely agree that this is a serious bug, as it affects a lot of users. Most people use Open Office and quick starter is an essential function when you want to access Open Office applications quickly. For unexperienced users the only one option is left, that is Powering Off a computer, which can damage the system. As it was noted earlier it can leave a very negative impression about Ubuntu.
