Yeah, in general it works (very slowly). I think a more transparent way to handle network errors would be good (just again several backup attempts failed due to a broken pipe). Mark it as a feature request. :)

The raspberry has USB2, but has to share it with the ethernet port as both ports are connected via one usb hub to the CPU.[0] That's definitely not improving performance...
