Bug Description

It's 2009 and we still have "username". I'm not a "user" - this is my computer, I paid for it! Not to be too long-winded but referring to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_(computing)
the connotations are demeaning and anachronistic.

At this point I don't have any alternative suggestions. It would be interesting to know if other language translations are so encumbered.

Even if you bought it... you still use it , right? so you are a user!

Also how do you expect to differentiate between personal computers and corporate systems?
If we were to identify the difference and the label accordingly , that would not be a simple fix.

If you have an appropriate label for *all* user scenarios , Kindly suggest some alternatives.

For the login screen I have suggested "Login name". This also helps distinguish it from your e-mail address, instant messaging accounts, Ubuntu One account, etc.

@Jon Wright :
Could you list all the locations , where "username" is used?
So that the change can be done appropriately throughout the OS.

The English language is not very fertile hunting ground for this one. Possibilities that point to the functionality rather pointing at the person are 'login', 'id', handle'. The second is so negatively ubiqitous it suffers more than the term we're trying to replace, the latter is too geeky. Combinations of words might work.

Better proposal: Ubuntuize it. Like the word Ubuntu brings values and ethos to the distro then another (African?) word could greet the user as they're asked to make their first interaction with their system. Other languages would use the same word, reinforcing it culturally.

Whether the label would need to fit *all* user scenarios or whether it'd be too difficult to differentiate between types of system are considerations which we should leave up in the air at this stage.

I doubt I could list 'all' the locations but I sure could try and make a start!

Sure a start a list, when you feel you have all , add the list to the bug description.
If you miss 1 or 2 some-else , might remind it :)

Yes,the term,"uername" should be either change to ,"Login Name" (or) show a simple, yet effective login id icons to click on similar to the windows xp.The current login face browser screen is a little irritating especially when more than 2 people use the same computer/pc.One has to scroll down or click on the arrows to get to their username.

It would seem that the original reason this bug was opened was due to the "username" at the login screen. With LightDM coming in Ubuntu Oneiric this has been changed to Login. So is this bug still valid or should it be closed??

It seems no other locations of username have been identified in two years. I will be marking this but as incomplete due to the LightDM changes, and if no-one has any other good reasons why it should remain open maybe it should be closed.
