1) have force_monitor OFF
2) connect your second monitor
3) awn didn't update, right?

 Yes, correct.

4) check and uncheck force_monitor
5) so now force_monitor is OFF again
6) any changes?

Correct, no changes.

The dock stays at x=1440 and the numbers in the configuration dialog are still 1440x900.
