While useful if it worked well chances are that any implementation would be less effective than our current method of using a desktop file.

The basic reason being the difficulty of determining the launching desktop file (if there is one and/or if one exists) from a window. So.. yes it can be done but the results tend to be suboptimal or at least require additional configuration after the fact.
