Ah. The reason why this isn't fixed in Xserver 1.9 is that the patches didn't get applied, and I didn't notice because (a) we had applied these in Ubuntu and (b) we hadn't updated the X server until now.
Adam has pinged the upstream xserver maintainer to get those patches applied.
There is still a gnome-session bug, but you're quite unlikely to hit it - it requires microsecond timing to trigger.
