I tried to get some useful info out of the .crash file, but it doesn't produce an useful stack trace.

Can you please ensure that you crash apport once, so that you have a /var/crash/_usr_share_apport_apport-gtk.1000.crash, and then do

  gdb --args python /usr/share/apport/apport-gtk /var/crash/_usr_share_apport_apport-gtk.1000.crash

type "run", let it crash, type "bt full", and then copy&paste the entire output here?
