I've experienced this Authentication Required behavior on a fresh install of Loki stable. I am not using a laptop. The system is just utilizing it's default settings of "Turn off display when inactive for: 15 minutes" and also "Sleep when inactive for: Never" I have not changed any default power or screen saver settings.
So unless the Dell bios is putting the system to sleep, given the above default settings, the system should just be returning from a display off mode, and not sleep, standby, or some hibernate mode.
Also, I didn't see it mentioned, but the root user password does not clear the box. It continues to display "Authentication failed. Please try again."
