I've found that rhythmbox can't repeat any of the alerts, such as bark.ogg or drip.ogg. It will try to for a few times then just quit, but act like its still playing them. I haven't tried it with any other sound files as I don't use rhythmbox.
As a work around, I'm using the custom command feature with vlc, which can repeat sounds.
The command is: vlc -R "file" (you can also use cvlc and it won't bring up a window.)
