I should note that the ~/.buildout/default.cfg file identifies the cache directories using the path involving the symlink:

[buildout]
download-cache = /Users/fdrake/.buildout/downloads/
eggs-directory = /Users/fdrake/.buildout/eggs/
index = http://download.zope.org/ppix/
