Wubi install does not use correct keyboard layout

Richiegs, let's try a little trick. At the login screen, you can press Ctrl-Alt-F1, and you will be moved to text mode. Try logging in using the username and password you have set. If it is successful, you can then log out by typing the 'exit' command. To get back to the graphical login screen, press Ctrl-Alt-F7.

Also, just for a sanity check, double-check both CapLock and NumLock.

This isn't a bug in ubuntu-docs so I'm reallocating it to Ubuntu itself.

Had the same issue yesterday. A Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit install performed "into" an existing Windows 7 installation via Wubi. The user was created but the password that was issued at the wubi install setup would not work.

I also tried logging in in console mode with this username/password combination but to no avail.

This is really a pity. Previously we were very impressed by the ease and seamless integration of this installation type, but this was spoiled by this issue. We finally resolved it by booting into recovery mode and resetting the password there via root console.

The password contained only lowercase letters so the issue cannot be because of some special character.

Do you need any other information that may help solving this?

Just a thought... could there possibly have been some sort of issue involving keyboard layouts? Maybe the login screen thought you had a particular keyboard layout that did not match your keyboard?

Oh yes, you are right.

I have a german keyboard layout in Windows. My password contained a "z", which is where on english keyboard the "y" is located. Wubi picked my "z"s up as "y"s in the setup dialog.

Just tested it. I can login to the Ubuntu installation when replacing all "z" with "y" in my password.

Well, I am guessing that the fault lies with wubi assuming an english keyboard? I haven't gone through a wubi install, so I don't know what questions it asks. For a normal Linux install, the first two questions are always about the language and the keyboard.

It does not ask for keyboard layout and language as it already runs on top of an operating system. So I think as it is some kind of native Windows application it should also honor the keyboard layout configured there.

It directly asks for a user name and password in the first dialog after choosing the type of install. See screenshot #1 here:

As password is masked one will not notice that a different password is stored than typed (on the configured windows keyboard layout).

Can you please attach the wubi log in your user temp directory?

I assume you mean this file in my windows AppData/Local/Temp dir?

same problem: installed ubuntu 12.10 with wubi. before installing it asks for the installation language BUT NOT keybord layout...
so the problem lies with the wubi programming since it assumes (probably) EN keyboard which is not the case for many....
