Bug Description

Binary package hint: vino

Rather an enhancement request than a bug:

Please change the standard Gnome Remote Desktop 2.18.1 notification icon to red rather than blue so that the target desktop has a reminder that there is an RD connection. Perhaps even a red icon that flashes every 5-10 seconds or so would be even better, *and* a message/popup that a remote session has terminated.

The problem is that the current GRD icon blends too well with the other icons on the task panel. The target desktop is made aware of the initial connection via the "Another user is controlling..." popup. However the popup is only about 3 seconds & then the blue icon appears. If a user is away from the desktop at the time of the connection, it is unlikely that they will notice the connection icon in the panel. Obviously, one can set the RDP connection properties to not allow a connection without the target permission. However even then the target desktop may forget the RDP connection after some time.

BTW: thanks for providing the RDP icon in Feisty.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Could you make a screenshot of the issue?

7.10.

I've attached a screenshot - the icon is the blue monitor just to the left of the orange update notification icon. As you can see it blends easily with the other two blue monitor icons; the one to the left of the remoted connection icon is for krdc and the one to the right of it is a standard network manager icon. Turning the remote connection to red would make it stand out and easier to remember that there is a remote connection vnc connection/session on the machine.

could you send the request to bugzilla.gnome.org if you still consider that as an issue?

I've learned to live with it... but if you can give me an idea which
icon image is used I'll be happy to experiment with it and propose a
suggested alternative upstream. There seem do be quite a few
preferences-desktop-remote-desktop.png and svg's and I've not been able
(yet) to find the one used by the applet on the panel.

Well, honestly there should be two icons:

1) one (blue current one) icon - when Vino server is running and no one is connected
(currently vino 2.24.1 you can choose if you wish to see icon in notification area all the time
vino-preferences, advanced tab, bottom of the window)

2) second (red) icon - if there is active remote desktop user/users

Sorry, but I forgot to write one important thing. Vino icons should also differ in shape, so color blind people can distinguish between them.

the bug should be sent to bugzilla.gnome.org by somebody who has an issue with the current icon
