Bug Description

Premise:
I wanted to see what would happen if you want to install only unity8 on yakkety, to achieve this I use mini.iso and effectively installed ubuntu core I then installed unity8-desktop-session (I added -mir but that is now just a transitional package that points at unity8-desktop-session)

ISSUE:
Once everything was installed on my all intel xps13 and I had reanabled splash I expected artwork for plymouth and lightdm all I got was a black screen for plymouth and then a black screen with a cursor for lightdm.

EXPECTED:
I expected to see what I see if I install unity8-desktop-session along side of unity7 install, and have the ability to login to unity8 however this was not the case at all and made the system impossible to use.
