Modules.dep could not be found

I just tried unetbootin with the latest iso from mint linux
it boots and I say to start mint then it tries to load but says
/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory

and stops there, I changed directory to /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/ and list the files, modules.dep is indeed in that directory.
I would have continued to load it manually with modprobe and continued to load linux if possible had I known the method of doing so.

alas, I do not.
