Bug Description
As mentionned in the mailing list on 24-10-2012, the software update notifications are not automatically generated/loaded to enable the update process as in the default Ubuntu distribution (Unity-based).
We might need to review the notification process to enable the true gnome-packagekit update process (vanilla style).

on fedora 'gpk-prefs' has an update tab, which installs a cron job to handle this. the Ubuntu 'gpk-prefs' is missing this tab, and most likely the updates tab in software settings is directed at update-manager (which is not installed).
