Bug Description

Recently Ubuntu on Windows updated to 2004.2022.1.0 and with that came a regression with the Windows 10 Start Menu launcher tile. Previously the tile honored the system background color. Now, alongside the seemingly random removal of the wide tile "Ubuntu", which I enjoyed using in my Start Menu came a tile with a blaring white background. Please restore the older tiles.

Windows 10 (21H2 19044)

See screenshots.

Previously the wide tile was orange with the Ubuntu written logo, now it's just a stressed logo with a white background that looks bad.

It seems that they have replaced the "Ubuntu on Windows" app with an entirely new one which includes the newly redesigned logo, In fact the old app is no longer searchable on the Microsoft Store.

I was able to install the new app and then remove the old one without losing any data in WSL.

New: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9PDXGNCFSCZV

I have no idea why this isn't just a standard app update...

Hi, thanks for your report.

"Ubuntu on Windows" is an old, no-longer-supported app. To enjoy any support, please use "Ubuntu" for the latest LTS, or any of the variants "Ubuntu 18.04 LTS", "Ubuntu 20.04 LTS", or "Ubuntu 22.04 LTS".

You can also use "Ubuntu (Preview)" to chack out the latest changes, but be aware that it is unstable.

You can use

1. Export a backup
wsl.exe --export Ubuntu backup.tar.gz

2. Uninstall the old App
3. Install the new app "Ubuntu" from the Windows Store
4. Check that nothing broke. If it did, then do:
wsl.exe --unregister Ubuntu
wsl.exe --import Ubuntu <InstallLocation> backup.tar.gz
# The install location is where you want the vhdx to live. $HOME should do it.

5. Once everything works, you can remove the backup:
Remove-Item backup.tar.gz
