Bug Description

Environment: Windows XP SP3
Ubuntu One for Windows Version 3.0.1
not behind proxy

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start Ubuntu One by clicking on the Ubuntu One Icon in the Start Menu.

Result:

1) Ubuntu One says "Getting Information. Please wait ..." for a rather long time (maybe 10 min)

2) Then Ubuntu One says "Sorry, an error occurred and Ubuntu One needs to close.". Clicking "Show Details" yields
---------------------------------------------
SyncDaemonClientConnectionError
'Could not connect to syncdaemon ipc.'
ActivationTimeoutError()
---------------------------------------------

3) After clicking "Close", the Ubuntu One window disappears.

4) The processes ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe, ubuntuone-syncdaemon.exe (several instances) and ubuntuone-sso-login.exe remain visible in the task manager, but no apparent syncing activity occurs.

Expected Result:

Ubuntu One should allow furher user input and start syncing.

Remarks:

a) I tried a fresh install (uninstall, delete registry keys, install) with the same symptoms

b) Ubuntu One used to work well on this computer before some update (I believe from 2.?.? to 3.0.0)

This error indicates one of our programs, syncdaemon, is not starting correctly. Could you attach the logs so we can debug it?

Thanks for the response.

Following https://one.ubuntu.com/help/faq/where-are-the-log-files-kept-on-windows/, I checked the directory under "Lokale Einstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\xdg\ubuntuone\". But I cannot find any log files.

The folder "Local Settings\Application Data\xdg" does not exist.

I have the following files and folders in "Lokale Einstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\xdg\ubuntuone\":

.
./shares (folder)
./syncdaemon (folder)
./syncdaemon/fsm (empty folder)
./syncdaemon/metadata_version (file with content: 6)
./syncdaemon/tritcask (folder)
./syncdaemon/tritcask/1337066494670398.inactive.tritcask-v1.data (file 869K)
./syncdaemon/tritcask/1337066494670398.inactive.tritcask-v1.data.hint (file 101K)
./syncdaemon/tritcask/1337066495185827.live.tritcask-v1.data (file 3.0G !!!!!!!!)
./syncdaemon/vm (folder)
./syncdaemon/vm/.version (file with content: 7)
./syncdaemon/vm/shared (empty folder)
./syncdaemon/vm/shares (empty folder)
./syncdaemon/vm/udfs (empty folder)

I checked if I can switch on logging with the U1-GUI, but since it says "Getting Information, Please Wait ...", I cannot not do anything useful.

BTW: u1sdtool show similar symptoms as the GUI.

I hope this helps.

I realized just today, that the problem disappeared on my computer. U1 fixed itself.

Here are the steps that may have caused the "self fixing":

1) I moved the files from the "Ubuntu One" folder to another folder of another cloud service because I was badly in need for syncing these files.

2) Afterwards I deleted the 3G of cache files under "Lokale Einstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\xdg\ubuntuone\".

3) Now (after two or three Windows reboots), I realized that the Ubuntu One client works properly.

Maybe the original error message was caused by inconsistent cache files or some kind of size limit on the cache files? (The size limit of the file system were not reached. I'm on an NTFS with several ten GB free).

In a Windows 7 it works perfect.

I have tried:

1. Fresh install installing the latest client ubuntuone-3.0.2b-windows-installer.exe or ubuntuone-3.0.2-windows-installer.exe
2. Uninstall client erasing registry entries and all log folders.

One more clue. The syncdaemon process starts when ubuntu one starts but the process disappears after some seconds. ubuntu-sso-login.exe an ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe processes remain active.

I have also tried the idea of J.Vaquero but it did not work for me :( The new xdg directory appeard but with the same error message.

Try to do it (add syncdeamon with netsh) manually, same error message
