Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

It happens at random and only when drawing something: a menu, a notification or something emergent. This bug wasn't present in Jaunty and Ubuntu ran without problems, but with Karmic and Lucid this bug doesn't seems to get fixed. In Karmic it was controlled since I stopped using Kmess which used knotify4 and definetly it caused a lot of crashes (the screen froze and olnly the mouse you could move, you saw everything in the background but nothing reacted). Later I changed to Emesene and that left the crashes to occur only barely randomly if I was using Emesene and Java on Firefox. However, now in Lucid it has become more random and occurs just for the sake of happening. I know the problems with the i845 and those kind of chipsets has come from a long time back, since compiz has came in and the chipset was blacklisted, but please, I would like my computer just work. Thanks in advance.

It has happened just again, two more times. I can almost confirm the crash is occuring when java is used, since last time I restores Firefox session and the Java was loading and it crashed immediately, reverting to the terminal screen, it flashes a few times and then the monitor turns off. I have installed:

sun-java6-bin
sun-java6-jre
sun-java6-plugin
sun-java6-fonts

All in the version 6.19-0ubuntu3 (just updated last night). Updated again the xsession-errors log.

xsession-errors are actually for client errors, not for X.org crashes. Also you said you are seeing a 'crash' but I wonder if what you mean is you're seeing a 'freeze' (aka a GPU hang) which is already a known issue for i845. I'll assume this to be the case and dupe the bug.
