There seems to be a problem with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Here's the change that I made:
----------
Section "Files"

# The location of the RGB database. Note, this is the name of the
# file minus the extension (like ".txt" or ".db"). There is normally
# no need to change the default.

# RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
    RgbPath "/etc/X11/rgb"
----------

That is, I commented out the reference to the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 file, and added a reference to the /etc/X11/rgb file. On my machine, there is no /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt file.

I'm going to report this as a bug against xorg.conf or a related package.

I can confirm this. emacs-snapshot does not start and neither does emacs21. They both print "undefined color: black" even though I have the correct RgbPath line in my database and showrgb prints out a whole lot of stuff including

0 0 0 black

there seems to be some incompatibility with emacs and the new xorg packages.

I confirm emacs can't be launched even with the modification to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I think it worked for a day or two, but it doesn't work now. Far as I can tell, I've got a fully up to date Dapper install.

Did something break again? Perhaps a hint at what the solution was?

Further testing: With the stock Dapper X, emacs works. With XGL, following the forum threads, updating to lots of new packages out there, it doesn't work.

So, where does one report XGL bugs?
