xboing crashes on start up

Bug Description
xboing crashes on start up with the following message:
$ xboing

No access to sound device: No such file or directory

Ubuntu 12.04. Same problem in KDE and Gnome.
Exactly the same thing occurs in Kubuntu 13.04
