3) What is expected to happen is when one copies all the files from the original Merriam-Webster version 3.1, 11 Edition CD into one folder, install latest stable or development WINE via following the instructions at http://www.winehq.org/download/deb, then launches the installer via typing at the Terminal:

wine merriam-webster.exe

it does so successfully.

4) What happens instead is that it crashes with a backtrace (please see attached file for results in wine1.2.1 and wine1.3.6).

Merriam- Webster 3.11 dictionary does not work.

I have 2 Ubuntu versions on 2 separate hard drives.

 In Ubuntu 9.10 and wine 1.1.43 - works perfect. I have installed Webster 4 months ago. with older version of wine. Since then I keep upgrading Wine and dictionary still works fine.

 Then I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 from cd on separate hard drive. I installed Wine from repository. Webster dictionary does not work on this instalation. Is the same version of wine, and the same computer.

Communicate appears: The program Merriam-Webster.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close.

I have solved problem on my computer.
 I compared content of system32 folders on my Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. System32 my Ubuntu 9.10 had few additional .dll files and few other files So i copied this missing files to my Ubuntu 10.04 installation and my Merriam-Webster dictionary works now. I am not a programmer so I do not remember which files i have copied but they probably existed in older version of wine because I never installed any additional .dll files.

As I sad before my dictionary works now but problem still remains.

I downloaded Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary 11th edition using torrent.

I attached output for this application but i do not know if it going to be useful because i already altered my system32 file

Appeared to install (from CD) properly, but not working under Fedora 12 (32-bit).

From: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=12844&iTestingId=51317

What works
Everything. Properties: must enter Work Path for the Webster program directory. A blank Work Path will result in an error message during the loading process, "The program mw.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close."

================

How does one "enter Work Path for the Webster program directory."

There is no mw.exe in my Merriam-Webster directory, but there is a
merriam-webster.exe

When

$ wine merriam-webster

I get the "serious problem" mentioned above.

What should I enter on the command line? "Work Path" to where?

Probably what it means is that you need to 'cd' to the programs directory first:

Finally I figured it out.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary works with older version of msvcirt.dll in system32 folder (I use file with modification date 16 Jun 1998).

With WINE 1.2.1 or 1.3.6, performed at the Terminal:

winetricks vcrun6

then:

wine merriam-webster.exe
fixme:ole:DllRegisterServer stub

The program launched and could use it successfully. Closed this, then tried:

wine Setscreenshot.pngup.exe
err:ole:create_server class {91814ec0-b5f0-11d2-80b9-00104b1f6cea} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {91814ec0-b5f0-11d2-80b9-00104b1f6cea} could be created for context 0x4

and it displayed the attached "WINE 1.2.1 or 1.3.6 screenshot.png: wine Setup.exe"
