this indicates a bug in your video driver. Please attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log. See also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for
general hints how to report good bugs on Xserver failures like here.

Reinhard,

I rebooted my laptop several times today, running other tests not related to VLC. Tonight I tried to watch a movie using the X11 video output (the one that was buggy), but for my surprise this time VLC don't crashed and worked flawlessly. I also tried all video outputs, in oder to see whether the buggy one could be other than X11, but all that suppose to work, worked.
I really dont know what happened, and very sorry for bothering.
Anyway, I'll attach the log and take a good look on that link you suggested, in case of future bug reports :)

     Thanks and regards

I did a fresh install of Karmic Alpha 4. I also installed cairo-dock and vlc. vlc will not play any video file. it just closes right away. i saw on the ubuntu forums other people said vlc wouldnt work if cairo was installed. did any of you install cairo-dock?

Well, I have cairo-dock running GL version and VLC works flawlessly... If it is a fresh install, you should update it.
A few weeks ago, after a update VLC stopped working, but next day it got working again.
You can also try switching the video output in configurations as a workaround. It worked for me while I waited for the next update.

The same problem. Removing Cairo-Dock solves the problem and VLC starts working.

There is a similar bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/cairo-dock-core/+bug/416294) and its is/will be solved in new Ubuntu version.
